HONOLULU — Hawaiʻi Pacific delivered an electric performance in an 85–78 overtime victory over Chaminade to win the Battle for Oahu at McCabe Gym.
The Sharks outscored the Silverswords 16–9 in the extra period, closing the game with defensive stops and steady free-throw shooting after the teams were tied 69–69 at the end of regulation.
Quentin Meza led the way with 19 points, while also providing a team-high 5 assists . Joshua Niusulu tailed him closely with 17 points, four of which came during overtime, where he went a perfect 4-4 from the charity strip.
Joshua West scored 14 and hit a crucial 3-pointer early in overtime to reclaim the Sharks' lead for the final time.
Nemanja Sarenac chipped in 12 points, including timely perimeter shooting that helped HPU rally from a nine-point halftime deficit.
Chaminade led 38–29 at the break, but the Sharks responded with a strong second half, outscoring the Silverswords 40–31 behind improved shooting and pressure defense. HPU shot 45 percent from the field for the game and finished with a 20–32 mark inside the arc.
Hawaiʻi Pacific also held advantages in points in the paint (18–12) and bench scoring (14–4), while forcing timely turnovers that shifted momentum in the second half and overtime.
The Sharks dominated defensively in overtime, holding the Silverswords to just three field goals as the Sharks pulled away.
The win firmly secures the Sharks second place spot in the PacWest standings right before heading into the Sharks brutal four-game final home stretch. Over the next two weeks Sharks will face some of the top talent in the PacWest, including first-place Point Loma this Thursday at 6:30.
