HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific shut out Chaminade 2-0 in a physical, high-energy match Saturday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium in the two teams' second meeting of the season. The win moves Hawai'i Pacific to 2-3-2 on the season.
Hawai'i Pacific struck early, as
Kelly Takara converted a penalty kick in the fifth minute to give the Sharks an early 1-0 lead. Hawai'i Pacific doubled its lead in the 43rd minute when
Samuel Sykes scored off an assist from
Konrad Mueller's corner, sending the Sharks into halftime up 2-0. HPU goalkeeper
Oliver Holt made three saves in the opening half.
Hawai'i Pacific controlled the second half defensively, with
Cameron Anderson taking over in goal to start the period and adding three saves to preserve a shutout for the Sharks.
Hawai'i Pacific led the match in shots: 13 shots, including 12 on goal, while Chaminade totaled 10 shots with six on goal.
Anthony Najafi led the Sharks with three shots on the night, all on frame.
Chaminade committed eight fouls in the first half to HPU's three, and the roles reversed in the second half, with the Sharks earning nine fouls to the Silverswords three. In a physical, card-heavy match, HPU's
Alex Arguijo, Konrad Mueller, and
Declan Rice each picked up yellow cards, while Chaminade had four individual cards. Each team also received a bench yellow card during the contest. Both teams had 6 corner kicks, with the two squads combining for nine in the second half.
Hawai'i Pacific opens PacWest play on the road against Point Loma on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 2:15 p.m. in San Diego.
