Craig Stanger 2019 Head Shot

Craig Stanger

A veteran collegiate coach of more than two decades, Craig Stanger is in his fourth season as the associate head coach for the Sharks, joining HPU in the summer of 2017.

Stanger was the head coach of the BYU-Hawaii women’s team from 2013 until BYUH closed its athletic department at the conclusion of 2016-17. He posted a 40-63 record for the Seasiders, bouncing from a 4-21 record in 2013-14 to a 15-12 mark in 2014-15 and a berth in the PacWest Conference Tournament. It was the second best season in BYUH women’s history and earned the school a spot in the PacWest tournament in only his second year at the helm. He continued to lead BYUH for the two seasons after the school announced its plan to close the department, earning double digit wins in each of the remaining seasons.

Stanger spent 17 seasons at Western Oregon, including six seasons as men’s head coach from 2005-2011, posting a record of 69-95 for the Wolves. He coached WOU to two national tournament appearances, and coaches the school’s all-time leading scorer, assists leader and steals leader. Several of his players have gone on to play professionally across the world and in the NBA G-League.

Prior to his collegiate coaching, Stanger led Murtaugh (Idaho) High School to a 1994 State A-4 Championship and a 1993 state finalist spot as he posted a 41-12 record and was the 1994 Idaho State Coach of the Year. He also served as an assistant high school coach for the American Fork (Utah) boys and the Spanish Fork (Utah) girls. He has also conducted basketball developmental camps for China University Basketball (CUBA) in numerous cities in central and far western China.

A 1992 graduate of Brigham Young, Stanger served as a Cougar support staff member as an undergraduate. He earned his master’s in education from Western Oregon in 1995.

Stanger and his wife Tiffani have three children, sons Matthew and Marcus, and daughter Peyton.
