Michael Johnson starts his second year on the HPU coaching staff.
His first season as outstanding as he helped the Sharks to the 2017 PacWest Conference Championship and Tournament Championship, and a NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. The Sharks posted a 29-3 season and advanced to the West Region Semifinals.
Johnson came to HPU after serving as top women’s basketball assistant at Brown Mackie (Kan.) of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. He primarily focused on defense and player development. He helped BMC to a four-game improvement from the prior season and a postseason appearance.
Prior to his coaching career, Johnson was an all-conference player at Kansas Wesleyan, where he scored more than 1,000 career points. As a four-year starter, he averaged 10 points, four rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in business management, with a minor in criminal justice and sports management. He is working toward a master’s in communications at HPU.
