Mahina Yap, formerly Haina, is in her third season as the top assistant for Hawai‘i Pacific University Volleyball, joining the program in August 2017.
Yap spent two seasons coaching in Hawai‘i’s high school ranks at Punahou (2016) and Le Jardin Academy (2015) before coming to HPU. She also spent two seasons on the bench at Cal State Northridge for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Yap brings extensive club coaching experience to the Sharks, with coaching stints with KaUlukoa in Oahu, and Flintridge, Supernova, LAVA West, Ventura, and 951 volleyball clubs in Southern California.
An outstanding player, Yap was a three-time All-Big West outside hitter at Cal State Northridge and helped lead the Matadors to the 2013 Big West Conference Championship and the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division I Tournament. She was also Big West All-Academic in 2011. She also was a standout for the Matadors in Beach Volleyball as part of the first teams at CSUN in the sport.
A graduate of I‘olani School in Honolulu, Yap was an honorable mention on the 2009 AVCA Under Armour All-America team and was the ILH Division I Player of the Year. She was an ILH All-Star as a sophomore, junior and senior.
Haina earned her Bachelor of Arts in journalism and history from CSUN, and a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Phoenix.
She is also a teacher at Star of the Sea Schools. She married former University of Hawai‘i football standout Beau Yap in June 2020.
