Kaneohe, HI (11/5/09) – At Atherton Field, the HPU women's soccer team defeated UH-Hilo in double overtime, 2-1.
Sanoe Souza posted both HPU goals as the Sea Warriors earned their first ever victory over the Lady Vulcans. HPU improves to 10-7-1 overall and 8-5 in the PacWest, while UHH drops to 3-11-4 overall and 2-7-3 in conference.
UH-Hilo grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Natalie Palacios hit a shot over HPU keeper
Carianne Makino's head after receiving a cross from Alysia Salvador. In the 80th minute,
Amber Fuller received her second caution, forcing the Sea Warriors to play a man short for the remainder of the match. Despite being shorthanded, HPU evened the match just minutes later, as Souza scored off of a
Jamie Hirai cross. HPU posted the game winner in the second overtime frame. Hirai again had the ball on the flank, and found Souza in the box who headed her shot past UHH keeper Shanna Brown for the sudden victory win.
Carianne Makino posted one save for HPU, with Brown recording eight saves for the Vulcans. HPU outshot UHH 17-3.
The Sea Warriors play their season finale this Saturday, November 7, against BYU-Hawai'i. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at Atherton Field.
