Hilo, HI (9/4/10) – On the final day of the Vulcan Classic, the HPU women's volleyball team defeated Saint Martin's (3-1) and Western New Mexico (3-0). The Lady Sea Warriors open the season at 4-0 with a perfect run in the tournament.
HPU dropped the first set 25-21 before winning three straight (25-23, 25-13, 25-16) to grab the win. Courtney Curran and Brittney Wood led HPU with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, with Natasha Bell and Pihana Kea each recording 10 digs.
Katy Ferguson led SMU with 11 kills.
In the second match of the day, HPU topped Western New Mexico by the scores of 25-20, 25-17, 25-23. This time the attack was led by Kelly Balanay who posted a team-high 11 kills. Kyra Pelayo and Chelsey Buyuan recorded 19 and 10 digs, respectively, and Natasha Bell added nine kills and nine assists.
Natali Murdock led WNMU with 16 kills.
HPU returns home to play in its own Equus Challenge. The Sea Warriors open with Texas Woman's University on Thursday, September 9, at Saint Andrew's Priory. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m., and will be broadcasted live on KWHE-TV and streamed at www.b2tv.com.
