San Rafael, CA (January 29, 2011) – For the second consecutive game, the Hawaii Pacific men's basketball team rallied to win from a large hole, this time HPU was down 17 early. A monstrous 52 point second half was a difference in the 74-70 win over Dominican University.
A Nick Frazier jumper put HPU up 68-62 with 1:01 to play, Dominican would attempt a rally, but HPU was a perfect 6-6 from the line. Unflappable, LaBrent Chappell went 4-4 in a seven second time span. Still, the score was 72-70 with: 19 seconds to play, a Royal Edwards rebound of a missed free throw iced the victory. The Sea Warriors shot a lofty 59% from the field and 86% from the line in the half.
Now at the halfway mark of the conference season, HPU is 5-3 and back to .500 at 10-10 overall.
Edwards was nearly unstoppable scoring a game-high 26 points, while Jason Jackson had 15, and Chappell and Frazier had 10 each. Kyle Allen led the green and blue with seven rebounds, Jackson and Edwards grabbed six wayward shots each.
HPU opened the second half on a 12-3 run, punctuated by a three-point make by Allen. The game remained tight with Dominican leading; the Sea Warriors did not take the lead for the first time until 6:18 to play.
Early on, the Sea Warriors found themselves down 22-5 with 9:02 in the first half, they would whittle away, but the Penguins held a comfortable 33-21 lead at the half. In the first period, HPU shot 5-24 (21%) from the floor.
Mark Lewis led the Penguins with 18 points, Dominican's records drops to 1-7 and 1-17.
HPU now returns home to play BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday, February 2nd at the Neil Blaisdell Center starting at 7:30pm. Before the game, the 2010 NCAA National Champions HPU Softball team will be presented their championship rings.
