Middles Unstoppable, Volleyball Team Rolls

Honolulu, HI (October 1, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific's starting middle hitters hit .429 with 24 kills to power HPU past Chaminade 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 25-13). HPU, winners of four straight, is 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the PacWest Conference.

The first set was close in the early stages. With the score knotted at 10, HPU ripped off a 9-2 run to gain control. A Sanoe Recca kill put HPU up 24-17, and after a Chaminade kill, an error ended it. HPU led early in the second set 15-9, but then the Silverswords caught fire, reeling off 11 consecutive points. Chaminade kept HPU at arm's length and won 25-21. After the second set, HPU left no doubt posting a pair of 25-13 wins in the third and fourth sets.

Natasha Bell and Courtney Curran both had 13 kills to lead all competitors. Curran and Haley Doerfler each hit .429, Doerfler had 11 kills. Pihana Kea posted another double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs. Kyra Pelayo had a game-high 23 digs. Recca had eight kills to go with 14 digs. Doerfler and Brittney Wood each had seven blocks.

Crystal Powell had 10 kills for Chaminade. The Silverswords are now 2-10, 1-5.

HPU and Chaminade will play again on Wednesday at 7 P.M. at McCabe Gym in Honolulu.
