Lockdown “D” Propels Women’s Hoops

Box Score Honolulu, HI (December 18, 2011) – The Hawai'i Pacific women's basketball team set the tone for the evening with a stifling performance on defense in its 69-45 win over regional opponent Western Oregon. HPU benefited from inducing 23 turnovers and WOU shot just 14-52 on the game (27%).

The game was tight early, but HPU took the lead for good at 9-7 on an old fashioned three point play from Mikela Thoemmes. By the 5:43 mark of the first half, HPU led 20-11. The Sea Warriors were not challenged in the second half, leading by as many as 28 at 69-41.

Five Sea Warriors reached double figures led by Mana Hopkins's 15. Taiyande Huskey, Melody Ladrido and Thoemmes each scored 12 points while Paris Gravely had 11. Nicole Fenumiai grabbed a team high six rebounds and Huskey passed out four assists.

HPU shot the ball well, going 25-52 for 48%. The three pointer was also falling, HPU hit 6-14 (43%) including three from Gravely.

The Sea Warriors are now 6-4 on the season as Western Oregon is now 3-9. The Wolves were led by Jade Haas's 12 points and eight rebounds.

HPU plays tomorrow against Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) at McKinley High School at 2 PM. The game is a neutral site contest as it is part of the Hoop N' Surf Classic.
