Honolulu, HI (August 27, 2011) – In the second game of the Hawai'i-Alaska Challenge, Hawai'i Pacific defeated Alaska Fairbanks 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-23). Twelve different Sea Warriors saw action, including the debut of freshman Megan Macias and Hannah Schuett.
HPU went unchallenged in the first two sets, in set one HPU took a 16-6 lead and didn't let up. The second set was close early, with HPU leading 14-12 before an 8-2 run to put the Sea Warriors comfortably in front. Set three was too close to call until Brittney Wood put away three straight kills to put HPU up 24-22. After a kill by Fairbanks, Haley Doerfler ended the game with her fifth kill of the afternoon.
Wood led the way with seven kills, hitting an incredible .778. Sanoe Recca helped out with six kills. Pihana Kea led the team in assists with 18, and tied for the team lead with Recca for most digs with seven each. Kyra Pelayo had four of the team's 11 aces, giving her seven in two games.
HPU's defense was stout, holding Fairbanks to a .000 hitting percentage.
Fairbanks was led by Reilly Stevens who had six kills, UAF drops to 0-3 on the year. HPU improves to 1-1.
The Sea Warriors will host the Hilton Waikiki Beach Invitational Thursday through Saturday, playing in four matches. Up first on September 1st is UC San Diego, first serve is at 7 p.m.
