Riverside, CA (January 19, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball team held conference leader California Baptist to seventeen points under their scoring average in a 58-54 win, the opener of a three game, three state road trip. The win marks the fourth time this season that HPU has held an opponent under 60 points.
Things did not start well for the Sea Warriors when Cal Baptist made a run of 16-3 in the early stages of the game. HPU continued to work and reduced the lead, which was once 13, to six heading into the break. Just three minutes into the second half, HPU tied the game on a
Kyle Allen layup. Minutes later, with 12:35 remaining, Fran Uril drained a pair of free throws that gave HPU the lead at 37-35. The Sea Warriors would not trail again. HPU used small runs of six and seven points to increase its lead, HPU led 55-43 with 2:46 to play. Cal Baptist's late rally would fall short as HPU moved back to .500 on the season.
Glenn Miller paced the Sea Warriors with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Uril also had 12 points to go with six rebounds.
LaBrent Chappell added 10 points, including HPU's only three-pointer of the night.
HPU held CBU to 36% (22-61) from the floor, while shooting 10% better (21-46) on offense. HPU defended the three point line well, as CBU hit only 3-21 (14%). HPU won the rebounding battle 38-37.
The Lancers were led by Ivan Patterson who scored 16 points. CBU falls to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the PacWest. HPU evens its record at 7-7 and 2-4.
HPU next heads to Dixie State on Saturday for a 7 PM game.
