Nick Frazier had his would-be half court game winner deflect off the back of the rim as the final horn sounded, leading to another tough luck loss for the Hawai'i Pacific (7-10, 2-7) men's basketball team. California Baptist (14-2, 8-2) escaped the Neal Blaisdell Center with a 56-54 win.
The entire game was very close, in fact, the game featured nine ties. However, it all came down to the last few seconds. The game was deadlocked at 54 when CBU's Andrew Fisk hit a baseline layup with 3.8 seconds left. The previous possession HPU turned the ball over with the shot clock about to expire.
The first half started well for HPU, gaining five point leads twice in the first six minutes. CBU answered every run and tied the game with 1:39 left in the half. Back-to-back baskets from Marco Cukic and
Sean Jones lifted HPU to a four-point halftime lead.
Frazier led HPU with 16 points, he was 8-9 from the field, the only shot he missed was from half court.
Glenn Miller added 11 points with five rebounds.
Kyle Allen had a team-high six rebounds while
Jelany White had a team-high six assists. Cukic also added a spark off the bench with nine points and five rebounds. Luke Evans led CBU with 20 points.
HPU won the rebound battle 27-25 and the HPU bench outscored CBU 27-11. HPU also shot the ball from the floor slightly better going 22-45 (49%) while the Lancers hit 20-43 (47%).
HPU retakes the floor on Wednesday against Grand Canyon at the Neal Blaisdell Center at 7 PM.
