Kaneohe, HI (October 28, 2012)-
Liana Gualdarama scored a pair of goals as the Hawai'i Pacific (6-7-3, 5-4-3) women's soccer team rallied late to earn a 2-2 draw against Dominican University (7-6-2, 6-4-2). Sea Warrior keeper
Kelby Boswell made two saves in her second start in net.
The theme of the match would be goals from distance, beginning with Penguin midfielder Lauren Gollnick beating Boswell on a free kick from well outside the 18 yard box in the fourth minute. The Sea Warriors would answer quickly however when Gualdarama sent a laser off a free kick from 25 yards out that snuck under the crossbar and over the outstretched hands of the Penguin keeper. Gollnick would strike again in the 27
th minute for the Penguins after receiving a cross just inside the 18. The goal would give Dominican a 2-1 lead that they would take to the half.
In the second half both teams struggled to get the offense going, totaling only five shots combined as the Penguins looked to hang on to the one goal lead. The Sea Warriors would tie the match however in the 82
nd minute when Gualdarama boomed a free kick from just inside the midfield stripe that bounced over the Penguin keeper and in to the net. With the score tied at 2-2 the match headed to overtime.
In the overtime periods both sides would open up in an aggressive back and forth battle that saw each side have chances on net. The Sea Warriors were able to get three shots on goal in the extra periods but none could get past the Penguin keeper, Megan Herring, who finished the match with eight saves. Despite the Sea warriors owning a 13-5 advantage in shots, the match would end in a 2-2 tie.
