California Nightmare for Women’s Soccer

Azusa, CA (October 4, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific (3-6, 2-3) women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Azusa Pacific (5-5, 4-2) by the score of 2-1 in double overtime. The Sea Warriors gave up the game tying goal with 37 seconds remaining in regulation and the game winner with one second in the second overtime. Megan Fuller picked up her fifth goal of the season and Kiana Kaiwi made nine saves in the losing effort.

HPU got off to a great start when Fuller touched in a cross from Sanoe Souza in the seventh minute giving the Sea Warriors a quick 1-0 lead. Both sides would exchange scoring chances in the first period, but the score would remain 1-0 at the half. Although leading on the scoreboard, HPU trailed in shots 7-4 and corner kicks 4-0.

The second half would see the Sea Warriors desperately clinging to their one goal lead as the Cougars outshot the HPU 11-3 in the second period. Azusa Pacific would eventually find the back of the net with 37 seconds left in regulation when Heidi Witschi headed a ball past Kaiwi  knotting the score at one and sending the match to overtime.

Overtime would play out much like the second half as the Sea Warriors struggled to generate offense while Kaiwi was forced to make three saves in the extra periods. The match appeared to be on its way to a draw when Witschi slipped past Kaiwi and scored her second goal of the match, the game winner, with one second left on the clock.

At the end of regulation, and two overtimes, Azusa Pacific held the advantage in shots 26-7 and dominated in corner kicks 14-0.

The Sea Warriors' road swing continues in San Diego, Ca where they take on Point Loma Nazarene University; game time is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
