Women’s Basketball Dropped by Ranked Foe

Honolulu, HI (November 23, 2012)- Shianne Solomon scored 12 points and Ieva Nagy grabbed seven rebounds, but the Hawai'i Pacific (3-2) women's basketball team fell to the 18th ranked team in the nation, Augustana College (SD) (4-0) by the score of 73-49.

The game remained close throughout much of the first half. Loren Gurrola hit a jumper at the nine-minute mark to tie the game at 16. The Vikings would go on a 13-3 run over the next 4:48 to take a double-digit lead. The Sea Warriors would shoot 26.5% (9-34) from field in the first half while the Vikings managed to hit 12 of 34 shots for 35.3%. The Vikings would take an 11-point lead to the break.

In the second half, HPU attempted to cut the lead down to single digits, but never could find the timely basket. Veanne Navarro hit a lay-up with 15:32 on the clock to cut the lead down to 10, but the Vikings went on an 18-5 run to take a 62-39 lead. The Sea Warriors would improve their shooting percentage in the second half, but struggled from behind the arc, only hitting 1-9 (11.1%) from distance.

The Sea Warriors return to action on November 24th to face interisland rival University of Hawai'i Hilo in a non-conference matchup at Moanalua High School; game time is scheduled for 7PM.
