Men’s Basketball Makes Big Comeback but Falls Short

Laie, HI (March 3, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball team (11-14, 6-11) trailed BYU-Hawai'i (10-17, 14-4) by 18 in the second half in the final game of the season, but that wasn't the end of the story.  The Sea Warriors made a huge comeback and had a shot to tie the game with six seconds left, but the comeback ended in a 74-70 loss.

HPU held the Seasiders without a field goal for the final 5:47, and went on a 9-0 run in that span.  Kyle Allen, who scored a game-high 24 points, cut the deficit to two points with a foul shot with: 47 left. The Sea Warriors got a stop on defense with: 21 to play, but Allen couldn't connect with: 06 left and a BYU-H rebound sealed the game.

With 13:42 left in the game HPU trailed 53-35. The Sea Warriors would chip away at the lead with a series of mini-runs to get within 11 before the final push. In the first half HPU started slowly and trailed 13-4. By the half, BYU-H led 37-25.

Allen had nine rebounds and went 9-16 from the field. LaBrent Chappell scored 22 points, including a perfect 12-12 from the foul line and 2-3 from three-point range in his final game. Senior Fran Urli scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds. Chappell and Nick Frazier both had a team-high five assists.

BYU-H senior Gary Satterwhite scored a career-high 21 points in his final game to lead the Seasiders.
