Honolulu, HI (September 12, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific volleyball team (6-2) took three straight sets from Chaminade (3-5) in an intense cross-town rivalry match at McCabe Gym on Wednesday night (25-13, 27-25, 25-18).
HPU looked the part of a conference heavyweight in the first and third sets, but the second set was by far the most exciting set of the year. The set was tied 19 times as the teams when back and forth. With the match knotted at 25, a hitting error on Chaminade set the stage for
Christina Furrer to win it with a kill, after a seemingly endless rally.
The first set was close, with HPU holding a 12-10 lead until an 11-2 run by the Sea Warriors settled the issue. HPU fell behind 4-0 in the third set, but tied the set at seven and would cruise from there.
Samantha Rummans led everyone with 11 kills, she was efficient too, hitting .308.
Sanoe Recca also reached double figures in kills with 10.
Pihanakealoha Kea posted a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs. Leading HPU in digs was
Makamae Recca with 11.
HPU will now travel to Hilo for the conference opener against UH-Hlio on Saturday. The match is set for a special 10 AM time.
Shark Bites: It was the first of three matches between the teams this season, tonight's match was non-conference…First year Chaminade coach Kahala Kabalis was HPU's lead assistant from 2009-2011, she was joined on the bench by former HPU All-American libero
Kyra Pelayo…HPU had zero receiving errors for the first time this season.
