Seasiders Top Women’s Soccer

Laie, HI (September20, 2012) - The Hawai'i Pacific (2-4, 1-1) women's soccer suffered its first loss of PacWest play to BYU-Hawaii (4-1, 2-0) by the score of 1-0. Andrea Aguirre led the way for the Sea Warriors taking four shots in the match while keeper Kiana Kaiwi made four saves.

The Sea Warriors best chances came in the first half as they outshot BYU-H 7-2. Despite enjoying the shot advantage in the period, only one Sea Warrior shot was on goal. Kaiwi stopped both shots she faced in the opening period.

The defensive stalemate continued in the second as both struggled to get shots on net. BYU-H would break the tie in the 87th minute when MaKelle Yates beat Kaiwi with a header off a corner kick by Kami Strait. With less than four minutes remaining, the one goal margin would be enough to deny HPU the victory. The Sea Warriors finished the match out-shooting the Seasiders 10-6.

After the game a disappointed, but proud head coach Gina Brewer commented on the game, “We played a solid game and had the majority of the play but we need to put away our chances and be more dangerous in front of goal.” Looking forward, Coach Brewer discussed her team's goals in order to take the next step, “I am proud of our effort today, now we just need to focus more on our execution in the final third.”

The HPU women return to action on Saturday, September 22nd against Chaminade at Atherton Field. Game time is scheduled for 3PM.
