Farman’s 20 Points Propels MBB to Win

Oakland, CA (January 19th, 2013)- The Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball (6-7, 3-3) team left little doubt in a 75-48 win over Holy Names (3-12, 0-7). The contest was the first between the schools as members of the PacWest Conference.

The game started close until the Sea Warriors took over on a jumper by Farbod Farman that gave HPU an 11-10 lead with 13:08 to play in the opening half, HPU would not trail again or the rest of the afternoon. Just four minutes later, the HPU lead would stand at 10 at 22-12. The Sea Warriors would continue to pour it on, leading by 24 at the half, 40-16. The defense was the key for HPU, limiting HNU to 7-24 shooting (29.2%) in the opening half.

The second half was more evenly played between the two schools, however HPU would never be threatened. The Sea Warrior never led by less than 16 in the second half and the advantage would reach 30 late in the ball game.

“I thought our team played a pretty complete game tonight. We had a little lapse to start the second half, but fought through it. Every player contributed, it is always a positive to get effort like this. Now we need to carry this over into Monday against Academy of Art,” said HPU head coach Darren Vorderbruegge.

Farman set a career-high with 20 points and nine rebounds in the win. HPU's size was on display with Marko Cukic also posting 14 points. Guards Kawika Lyons and Malte Ziegenhagen each chipped in with nine points. Kevin Attila came off the bench and distributed the basketball well with six assists to go with five rebounds.

The Sea Warriors didn't take many three-pointers, but they were still very effective, connecting on 5-10 (50%)

HPU looks to stay hot on Monday when they cross the San Francisco Bay to take on Academy of Art; game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
