San Rafael, CA (January 23, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball team (6-9, 3-5) dropped a PacWest road game to Dominican University (9-7, 5-3) 65-58 on Wednesday night at the Conlan Center. The loss leads to a season split between the Sea Warriors and the Penguins.
HPU was again in the game late before falling. After trailing for most of the second half, HPU pulled to within two at 58-56 with 1:21 to go after four straight points from
Malte Ziegenhagen. Dominican's Devin Golston got loose on the ensuing possession for a dunk, but HPU would answer.
Farbod Farman, who is averaging 17 points per game on the road trip, hit two clutch free throws to make it 60-58 with 33 seconds left. However, Dominican would go 5-6 from the foul line in the final seconds to preserve the win.
HPU opened the game strong leading 10-4 on a layup by
Jason Jordan with 13:20 left in the first half. Dominican would strike back with a 16-0 run to make it 20-10 at the 5:28 mark. Ziegenhagen would get the final basket of the half to cut the deficit to nine at 33-24 at the break.
HPU wore down Dominican early in the second half and took a 38-37 lead with 12:11 left after another Ziegenhagen bucket. The Dominican lead would reach 10 before HPU made its final push featuring eight consecutive makes from the foul line.
Farman led the way with 16 points and five rebounds. Ziegenhagen had 14 points as
Max Livingston had nine points, on 3-3 from deep.
HPU will now travel to Fresno to battle Fresno Pacific on Saturday at 4:30 PM.
