Box Score HONOLULU, HI (October 25, 2013)- The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (13-7, 7-5) lost in three sets to visiting Dixie State University (13-7, 10-4) on Friday night in downtown Honolulu (25-15, 25-15, 25-20).
The Sea Warriors came charging out of the gate in the opening set, taking a 3-1 lead. Kills by
Haley Doerfler and
Pomai Recca and an ace by
Amanda Moriarty put HPU in front, but it was short lived. HPU regained the lead at 9-6, but an 8-1 run gave the Red Storm a four-point edge. The Sea Warriors pulled to within two at 14-12 on kills by
Samantha Rummans and
Elizabeth Culpepper, but the HPU rally ended there.
Set two was close early, with HPU up 5-4; Dixie State took the next four points to earn the advantage. The Sea Warriors did not seriously challenge the visitors for the rest of the set.
The third set was the closest of the match. Down two points at 11-9, kills from
Christina Furrer and Doerfler knotted the set at 11. However, HPU was unable to take a lead for the rest of the set. There was no quit in the Columbia Blue and Kelly Green as the lead was trimmed to one four different times.
Ultimately, HPU hurt itself with a .081 hitting percentage and 10 service errors. Head Coach
Daryl Kapis thinks his team needs to return to basics.
"We gotta take care of the fundamentals. We didn't serve well or pass well. We didn't give ourselves much of a chance."
HPU will be back on the court tomorrow to play Fresno Pacific at 6:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Priory.
