Men's Soccer Tripped Up in OT

Box Score RIVERSIDE, CA (October 3, 2013)—The Hawai`i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (4-3-1, 2-1) dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to California Baptist (4-3-1, 4-2) after giving up an own goal in overtime on Thursday. The loss is HPU's first on its four game road trip.

The first half played even as both sides struggled to score a goal. HPU held a 6-5 advantage in shots including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal in the first period.

The Sea Warriors broke through early in the second half, when reigning Pacific West Freshman of the Week Erik Kemsies sent a free kick in to the box to an open Jimmy Baggett. Baggett, a senior, notched his first goal of the season, and his first since his freshman year, to give HPU a 1-0 lead.

The Lancers would answer just four minutes later, on a long through ball to knot the score at 1-1. Both sides would have their chances in the final minutes with the Sea Warriors narrowly missing a game winning goal with less than a minute to play. With the score still tied 1-1 the game went to overtime.

In overtime the Columbia Blue and Kelly Green sought to capitalize on the advantage after the Lancers had been shown a red card leaving them a man down.

It would be Cal Baptist who would capitalize however, earning the golden goal on a cross in to the box that deflected off a Sea Warrior defender in to his own net giving CBU the 2-1 victory.

Head Coach Chris Fisher commented on his team's tough road loss, "It was an evenly played game and the difference from this game and the last, is that we did not finish the chances we created. It is unlucky to lose the game on an own goal, but we move on and prepare for a good Point Loma team."

With the assist Kemsies was strong again for HPU, registering a point in his third straight game.

Felipe Silva and Brais Garcia paced the Sea Warriors offensively combining for nine of HPU's 13 shots on the day.

HPU concludes its road trip on October 5th when they travel to San Diego to face Point Loma Nazarene. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
