Volleyball Short-Circuited in San Francisco

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 3, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (11-3, 5-1) was turned back on Thursday against Academy of Art (6-8, 2-4) in five sets (25-19, 27-29, 21-25, 25-21, 15-9).

The first set was a back and forth affair, especially early. With the set tied at 10, Art U went on a 5-1 run to take command. HPU reduced the deficit to three at 20-17, but the Sea Warriors got no closer as the Urban Knights closed out the first set 25-19.

Art U continued its hot play into the second set, but this time, HPU had an answer. A 6-1 run put HPU on top 14-9 on a Pomai Recca kill. HPU held the lead until late when the Urban Knights tied the set at 24. The set would also be tied at 25, 26, and 27 before an Art U attack error put HPU on the brink. Amanda Moriarty then ended the drama with an ace.

After a 7-7 tie in the third set, HPU took control. The Sea Warriors wouldn't be tested from there leading by at least two points the rest of the way.  Kills by Haley Doerfler and Samantha Rummans closed the third set in style.

With a chance to end the match in the fourth set, HPU faltered. Neither team could pull away however, as the match was tied at 18. It was a 6-1 Art U spree that doomed the Sea Warriors. Kasey Thompson's kill kept HPU in the match at 20-24, but Art U slammed the door to force a fifth set.

The final set was trouble from the outset as HPU fell behind 6-2. The Sea Warriors did not recover.

Rummans led the team with 16 kills as Thompson and Recca each had 11. Recca added 15 digs.

Both setters, Marie Fujii (21 assists, 12 digs) and Hannah Schuett (23, 11), posted double-doubles.

Chelsey Buyuan registered a game-high 28 digs.

HPU now heads to Fresno Pacific for a match on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PST.
