Box Score HONOLULU, HI (November 9, 2013) – It was a day of highs and lows for the Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team, but it ended on a sour note as the Sea Warriors (16-9, 10-7) fell in five sets to host Dixie State University (25-13, 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12).
With the matched tied at two sets apiece and the fifth set tied at 10, Dixie State (16-8, 13-5) reeled off three consecutive kills to take control.
Haley Doerfler, who had a great match, put HPU back to within two at 13-11 with a kill. However, two of the next three points went to the home team to end the match.
HPU looked overmatched early in afternoon as the Red Storm rolled to a 25-13 victory in the first set. Undeterred, HPU came out fighting in the next two sets. Â
The second set was a roller coaster. HPU led 3-0, but the set was soon even at nine. Dixie State then went on a 6-0 run to seemingly grab the momentum. The Sea Warriors would not go away, taking six of the next seven points to make it a set again at 16-15. Back and forth the two sides would go, until the Red Storm grabbed a 22-21 lead. That would be all for Dixie State as HPU took the next four points and the set, highlighted by a
Kasey Thompson ace to end it.
The third set was similar to the second. HPU claimed a 12-9 advantage, but seven straight points from the home club gave DSU the 16-12 lead. Not to be outdone, HPU then ripped off the next six points to reclaim an 18-16 lead. After a tie at 19, HPU used a kill by
Pomai Recca and an ace by
Amanda Moriarty, along with two DSU errors to lead 23-19. It was Thompson who again ended the set, this time with a kill.
After wins in the second and third sets, HPU had a chance to close out the match in the fourth. However, a .077 hitting percentage doomed the Sea Warriors. HPU still has its chances, but Dixie State took the lead for good when it broke a 14 all tie. Thompson was again clutch late with a kill to make it a 21-19 score, but that is as close as HPU would get.
Doerfler posted 11 kills with an astronomical .526 hitting percentage, she was just as good on defense with eight block assists.
Elizabeth Culpepper also had a strong hitting night with 11 kills and a .375 hitting percentage. Recca added 10 kills.
Samantha Rummans tallied 15 digs as
Hannah Schuett had 23 assists to lead HPU in those categories.
HPU next heads to Riverside, CA to take on California Baptist on November 11th.
