Men’s Basketball Tripped Up at Chaminade

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (December 7, 2013)—The Hawai`i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (3-2, 1-1) suffered its first Pacific West Conference loss of the season Saturday falling to cross-town rival Chaminade (4-3, 2-0) by the score of 96-87 at McCabe Gymnasium.

Things looked good for the visitors early as the Sea Warriors jumped out to 14-7 lead. The Silverswords would chip away and eventually took the lead, but back-to-back-three pointers from junior John Horowitz gave HPU a 34-31 lead with just over four minutes to play in the half. Chaminade responded with a three-pointer of its own on a 10-3 run to close the half and took a 41-37 lead to the break.

Like they did in the first half things looked good for the Sea Warriors initially only to have the Silverswords go on a run to begin the second half. On the first possession of the half senior, Leif Rodney found a curling Malte Ziegenhagen on the wing for a three-pointer. Chaminade quickly answered with a 10-0  surge to take a 51-40 lead.

HPU clawed its way back, cutting the deficit to eight, but four made Silversword free throws following a Sea Warrior foul away from the ball and a subsequent technical foul pushed the deficit back to 12.

Hawai`i Pacific again threatened in the closing minutes when Darry Jones Jr. put the Sea Warriors within six with 2:30 to play after splitting a pair of defenders for a layup to make the score 83-77. Ziegahagen drew a foul and hit a pair of free throws on the next possession to cut it four, but the Sea Warriors would get no closer falling 96-87.

Point guard Justin Long led HPU with 22 points while Jones Jr. and Ziehenhagen each added 18.

HPU outrebounded the Silverswords 44-31, but suffered from 23 turnovers.

The game was a foul filled affair with both teams combining for 61 fouls leading to seven players being disqualified and 92 total free throws attempted in the contest.

The Sea Warriors return to action on December 14th when they face BYU-Hawaii at Moanalua High School. Tip off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
