Honolulu, HI (February 9, 2013) – After the ball not bouncing the Sea Warriors' way in several close games this season, the Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball team (8-11, 5-7) made the big plays to earn a 60-58 win over Point Loma Nazarene University (4-16, 1-11). The 60-58 triumph capped an emotional night in which bike/skateboard helmets were given out in remembrance of late HPU basketball player Kameron Steinhoff.
With the Sea Warriors leading 56-55 and 1:16 to play,
Malte Ziegenhagen made a strong cut to the basket and scored to give HPU a three-point cushion. However, Sea Lion Oivind Lundestad buried a three-pointer to tie the game with 42 seconds on the clock. After an HPU timeout, HPU ran a set play for
Farbod Farman who hit a tough one hander to give HPU a two point lead with 10 seconds to play. PLNU's Taylor Wetherell took a three-pointer for the win but it was off the mark and the Sea Warriors celebrated.
The game was tight throughout and featured 16 ties. The biggest advantage either team held was just five points, which was by PLNU early in the second half.
HPU had the edge on the glass (29-26) and shot the ball better in all three categories.
Farman had a huge game with 23 points and eight rebounds on a remarkable 10-12 shooting from the field. Farman is now ranked third in the PacWest in field goal percentage at 64% on the season. Ziegenhagen had 10 points including two hits from long range.
HPU will be back in action on Monday night against Cal Baptist at 5:00 PM at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
