Men’s Hoops Setback on Senior Night

HONOLULU, HI (February, 16, 2013) - The Hawai'i Pacific (9-12, 6-8) Men's Basketball Team suffered a setback in their attempt to gain a PacWest playoff berth, losing to Azusa Pacific (10-11, 7-6) by the score of 65-53. Kevin Attila led HPU with eleven points and two assists.
 
Senior Jelany White got the Sea Warriors going early hitting a three-pointer less than a minute in to the game. The Cougars would respond with a 15-4 run to put HPU in a big hole early. Down 11 with 12:20 to play in the half, the Sea Warriors would go a 19-2 run to take a six point lead with six minutes to play in the half. APU would tie it at 31 before the half with a deep three-pointer.
 
HPU finished the first half shooting 34.5% (10-29) from the field including 38.9% (7-18) from the three-point line. APU would hit nine of its 22 shots from the field (40.9%) including six of 12 (50%) from beyond the three-point line. 
 
In the second half, the Sea Warriors would keep it close until the shooters lost their range. Up 42-41 with 11:30 to play HPU would go nearly nine minutes without a field goal. By the time Atilla hit a three-pointer with 2:42 left, HPU found itself with an eight point deficit. The Sea Warriors would try to foul to get back in the game, but the Cougars would hit 11 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
 
The Sea Warriors remain in sole possession of the sixth seed for the PacWest tournament after Academy of Art was defeated by Fresno Pacific.
 
The game marked the final time White and fellow senior Marko Cukic would play in front of the home crowd. White finished with five points and an assist. Cukic would finish with five points and a team-high seven rebounds.
 
The Sea Warriors finish the season on the road beginning on Monday as they head to the Big Island to take on UH-Hilo; game tips off at 4:30 PM.
