HONOLULU, HI (February 5, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball team (7-11, 4-7) had visiting cross island rival, BYU-Hawaii (10-9, 7-4), right where it wanted it. The Sea Warriors led by six points with under a minute to play in regulation, but hot shooting by BYU-H sent the game to overtime where the Seasiders prevailed 85-84.
Somewhat lost in the final outcome was the comeback that HPU orchestrated. With 2:42 left in the first half the Sea Warriors trailed by 14 at 33-19. However, a 7-0 run cut the lead in half at the break and put HPU within striking distance at 33-26.
A pair of foul shots from
Malte Ziegenhagen, who scored a game-high 32 points, less than two minutes into the second half cut the lead down to three. With 11:36 left in regulation, Ziegenhagen hit a three-pointer to tie the game for the first time at 42 all. The game was also tied at 50 before HPU used a 10-2 run to take control at 60-52. The Sea Warrior lead would grow to 10 with 2:06 to play.
With 36 seconds to play, HPU led 71-66 but the Seasiders hit two contested three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. In between the baskets
Farbod Farman split a pair of foul shots to lead to a 72-72 tie. Both teams had the ball in the last 15 seconds but neither was able to score.
The overtime period saw five ties and five lead changes, the back-and-forth affair saw HPU leading 84-83 with :43 seconds left. BYU-H's Junior Ale (22 points) made a layup with :11 to play. HPU had the final shot of the game but it just missed.
Jason Jordan had 12 points on 5-7 shooting as Farman scored 10 on a perfect 4-4 from the floor.
Marko Cukic added nine points and a team-high five rebounds. Ziegenhagen also had a team-high five assists.
The Sea Warriors will return to the court on Saturday at the Neal Blaisdell Center at 5:00 PM to take on Point Loma Nazarene.
