Men’s Soccer Loses Early Lead, Game Vs. #2 Clan

Box Score
BURNABY, BC (September 12, 2013)—For the second consecutive season, the Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (1-1-1) took an early road lead on one of NCAA DII's top programs, but again fell just short, losing 2-1 to second ranked Simon Fraser (3-0).

Freshman Erik Kemsies kicked off the scoring in the 12th minute for an HPU team that controlled the action early on. After a foul on SFU, Kemsies took a direct free kick from just outside the box and curled it around the Clan wall, just inside the near post for the first goal of his collegiate career.

The SFU responded in the 33rd minute scoring a header off a throw in and took the lead just 10 minutes later, beating the Sea Warrior keeper from point blank range.

The Sea Warriors nearly tied it up early in the second half, forcing the SFU keeper to make a save on a Kamali Webson header off a corner kick from Alejandro Porras. Mael Lefebvre kept Hawai'i Pacific in the match in the second half, stopping both Clan shots on net, but the Sea Warriors failed to produce a goal to tie.

The Sea Warriors finished the game narrowly trailing SFU in shots on goal at 6-4 and matched the home team in corner kicks with five apiece.

Head Coach Chris Fisher commented on the game, "We were the better team in the first 15 minutes and deserved the goal, which was probably the worst thing to happen because we dropped too much defensively after.  We regrouped at the half and it was an even game. We just could not come up with the equalizer. All in all, we played toe-to-toe with one of the top teams. We are right there."

The road trip continues as the Sea Warriors now jump on a train and head South to face Western Washington on September 14th in Bellingham, WA; kick off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PST.
