KANEOHE, HI (SEPTEMBER 21, 2013)—The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (2-2) dropped a non-conference matchup on Saturday, losing 1-0 in a tight contest against BYU-Hawai'i (1-1-1) at Atherton Field.
The first half featured a defensive chess match, as both teams struggled to put shots on goal. After each keeper was tested in the early minutes, the opposing defenses tightened up and neither side would put a shot on frame in the final 20 minutes of the half. With neither side able to break through, the score remained 0-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Seasiders would finally break through in the 57th minute on a counterattack off an HPU scoring chance. With the Sea Warriors pushed up on a corner, BYUH broke out, blowing through the midfield and finishing on a shot from point blank range.
Down a goal late Hawai'i Pacific pushed the action, nearly scoring on an
Andrea Aguirre free kick in the 86th minute. Two minutes later Aguirre found a cutting
Lexi Cameau in the box, but the Seasider keeper made the save to preserve the 1-0 win.
Despite the loss the Sea Warrior out-shot the Seasiders 13-7, including 8-3 in the second half. The lone BYUH goal is just the third goal allowed by HPU through four games.
Freshman goalkeeper
Anu Kahele-Manners made three saves in her first start in net for the Sea Warriors.
The Sea Warriors return to action for the final non-conference tune up on Wednesday, September 25th against University of Hawai'i at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
