Women’s Soccer Falls in Overtime

Box Score KANEOHE, HI (October 11, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (6-4-1, 3-3) lost against California Baptist University (6-4-1, 4-0-1) on Saturday afternoon by a 4-3 count in the first overtime period at Atherton Field.

The Sharks started well in a fast paced and attractive game. In the seventh minute, Ashlyn Ubongen eluded two defenders on the left side and sent a low cross to Erika Ellis who was waiting to grab the early lead for the Sharks.

Just one minute later (8'), Lexi Cameau made it 2-0 with a spectacular shot from outside the box over the goalie into the top corner of the goal.

The Sharks kept pushing for another goal and were the dominating team during the following course of the first period.

In the 38th minute, however, the Lancers picked the ball up in the midfield and a long lob over the goalie resulted in a 2-1 score.

Just seconds after the changeover (46'), Ellis found Ubongen with a good pass inside the box to make it 3-1 for the Sharks.

Despite the Sharks' lead, the Lancers did not show any signs of desperation and stepped up their game. CBU pushed hard and was attacking early, resulting in several bad passes for the Sharks.

In the 51st minute, the Sharks' defensive wall broke. After a scramble in the box, the ball could not be cleared and it deflected off an HPU player and into the goal making it 3-2.

Knowing that the game was open again, the Lancers kept attacking and made the Sharks struggle. Sixty-nine minutes into the game, CBU managed to score the equalizing goal after another scramble in the box. Once more, the ball unluckily deflected inside the goal off of the HPU defense.

After no more goals in the second period, both teams were faced with overtime. HPU fought hard but still struggled with CBU's fast forechecking. A good cross from the left side found a CBU player inside the box, scoring the golden goal with a good shot (98').

"We fought hard and scored early in the first and second half but we needed to defend better to hold the lead. CBU was very dangerous in the attack and they came at us relentlessly. We will learn from this and continue to get better," said Head Coach Gina Brewer after the game.

The statistics present an advantage in shots (19-15) and shots on goal (8-6) for the Lancers. Ubongen led the Sharks with four shots.

The Sharks will play one more game against BYU-Hawai'i on Friday, October 17, at 3:00 p.m. at Atherton Field before they travel to the mainland.
