Box Score SAN RAFAEL, CA (October 23, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (9-4-1, 6-3) defeated Dominican University of California (2-11-1, 2-5-1) 5-0 on Thursday afternoon. The woman of the match was
Erika Ellis who scored three goals.
The first minutes of the game presented a tough fight in the midfield. After 31 minutes,
Ashlyn Ubongen fired the Sharks' first shot on goal, but it was saved by the DUC goalie.
Just five minutes later (36'),
Erika Ellis opened HPU's goal fest with a header goal after assist from
Julia Borges.
Following, the Sharks struck three times within three minutes. First, it was Ubongen who converted a penalty kick, following a bad foul inside the box and a red card on DUC (42').
Just seconds later,
Sara Romo found Ellis with a good cross from the left side who made it 3-0 with a good shot (43').
In the 44th minute,
Meghan Cooley fired a good shot (again from Romo) that was deflected into the goal by the DUC keeper. It was Cooley's second goal of the season.
It was four goals for HPU in an eight minute span, essentially winning the match in the first half.
Early in the second period (53'), Ellis made the hat trick complete with a great shot inside the upper left corner of the goal. Ellis' ninth goal of the season brings her to second place on the PacWest Scorer Board again.
In the remaining minutes, HPU had several more good chances and continued making the plays, carrying home the win in a calm and experienced way.
"The team came out with the right mentality and executed well. It was a total team effort and a great win," said Head Coach
Gina Brewer after the victory.
HPU was also significantly leading the statistics in shots (15-6) and shots on goal (10-2). Ubongen was active with four shots. Despite the red card, the physically hard play also resulted in a total of 37 fouls (DUC 23 – 14) and three yellow cards (DUC 2-1).
The Sharks will play one more game on the road, on October 25th, against Fresno Pacific University before they travel back to Hawai'i.
