Box Score KANEOHE, HI (October 4, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (5-2, 2-1) earned a 3-1 win over Azusa Pacific University (2-6, 0-2) in a tough rain-soaked battle on Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks started well in the third PacWest conference game of the season against defending champion Azusa Pacific.HPU came out early and tried to make the plays in the first minutes of the fast paced game. Both teams were struggling with difficult conditions due to heavy rain at the soaking wet Atherton Field.

Goalkeeper Kelby Boswell, who finished with seven saves, stood out with some important saves for her team in the first half.  The wet ground made the ball fast and unpredictable and challenged both goalkeepers.

In the 34th minute, it was Breanna Gaddis who grabbed the lead for the Sharks after a scramble in the box that couldn't be cleared by the Cougars' defense. It was Gaddis' first goal this season.

After the changeover, Azusa Pacific played more active but it was the Sharks who took chances. In the 58th minute, Sierra Kadooka got the ball just outside the box and executed a perfect lob over the keeper, resulting in the 2-0 lead for the Sharks.

Even with a two goal lead, the Sharks continued to play offensively and pushed for another goal. With 21 minutes left in the game, the very active playing Ashlyn Ubongen sent a pass through a slot in the Azusa defense and across the box to Lexi Cameau who fired a powerful shot inside the goal.

The Cougars managed to strike back four minutes later (73'). After a miscleared ball, Azusa Pacific scored to make it 3-1 with a good shot from outside the box.

In the following course, the Sharks' defense managed to keep the spaces for Azusa tight and secured the victory.

Despite HPU's win, Azusa Pacific led the statistics in shots (15 -9). Both teams recorded eight shots on goal.

Head Coach Gina Brewer was content after HPU's first win against Azusa Pacific in school history. "I am very happy with the win over last year's conference champion. The team battled for all 90 minutes and they really deserved the win."

The Sharks will play their next game on Monday, October 6th at 3pm at Atherton Field against Point Loma University.
