Box Score KANEOHE, HI (October 6, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (5-3-1, 2-2) lost today's game at a muddy Atherton Field by a 2-0 score against visiting Point Loma Nazarene University (5-2, 4-0).
The game started with an advantage in shots and chances for the Sea Lions who were attacking early and consequently did not give HPU any space to develop its play. The Sea Lions were attacking fast, forcing the Sharks into bad passes that resulted in several good chances for PLNU.
When HPU's defense was not able to clear the ball after a scramble in the box, the Sea Lions took their chance and grabbed the lead (13').
In the following course of the first half, the Sharks had a hard time controlling the ball and finding their teammates. However,
Lexi Cameau and
Sara Romo presented some good shots on counter attacks.
After the changeover, the Sharks came back far more aggressive and outgoing. HPU was able to control the play, presenting more running and physically hard, but fair play.
In the 55th minute Loma, who reduced its game to counter attacks in the meantime, was able to make it 2-0 on a penalty kick.
What followed was a run on Loma's goal from the Sharks, evinced by the Sharks' advantage in shots of (13-4) in the second period. Ubongen (56'), Cameau (62') and
Erika Ellis (71') all had great chances but their shots were killed by the visiting goalie.
The Sharks tried everything in the last minutes of the game but the clock counted down mercilessly, resulting in a 2-0 loss for HPU. Loma had to finish the match with just ten players due to red card (2nd caution) in the 83rd minute.
Despite the loss, the statistics show an advantage in shots (16-9) for the Sharks. Five of the Sharks' shots were on goal.
"We were out on the attack in the second half and had our chances but did not put them away. Unfortunately we started off slow and needed to have a better first half to win this game. You cannot just have one good 45 minute half, you have to put together a full 90 minutes," commented Head Coach
Gina Brewer after the game.
The Sharks will play their next game on Thursday, October 9th, against Dixie State University at Atherton Field. Kick off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
