Box Score LAIE, HI (November 13, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (14-11, 12-7) was swept (25-12, 25-19, 25-23) by ninth-ranked BYU-Hawaii (20-5, 17-2) on Thursday night in the season's final road match.
In the opening set senior
Christina Furrer tied the score at six, but an 8-0 run gave the Seasiders control. BYU-H showed it is worthy of its ranking and won the set going away.
The Sharks rebounded in the second set and stayed with the home team most of the way. A kill by
Kasey Thompson drew HPU to within three at 17-14. The difference was still three at 20-17, but BYU-H closed the set despite kills from Furrer and
Haley Doerfler.
Thompson tied the third set at 14 with a kill before
Elizabeth Culpepper and Doerfler registered back-to-back kills to put HPU up 16-14. Later, a 5-0 run by the Seasiders gave BYUH the lead late in the set. Down 23-20,
Pomai Recca put away two kills in consecutive possessions, but it was not enough as BYU-H clinched its fifth consecutive PacWest Championship.
Culpepper led the team with 12 kills as Recca did in digs (15) and
Tenika Wentworth in assists (16).
HPU closes the season on Saturday as the Sharks says aloha to seniors
Marie Fujii, Doerfler, Furrer, and
Hannah Schuett. The match against UH Hilo begins at 6:00 pm at St. Andrew's Priory.
