Box Score HONOLULU, HI (December 21, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (8-2) routed NAIA Ottawa University (8-6) 83-61 on Sunday afternoon at the Blaisdell Center in the final action before the holiday break.
There was no drama in this contest, the visitors held the lead once in the game and for less than a minute. After the Braves took a 3-2 lead, HPU responded with a dominating 16-0 run. The HPU defense held Ottawa scoreless from 19:18 until 10:50 and it didn't stop there.
Darry Jones Jr. put HPU up 21 on a three-pointer with 3:29 left in the opening half. The Sharks retreated to the locker room with a 43-23 lead.
HPU was not challenged in the second half; the closest the opposition got was 16 points at 47-31 with 17:01 to play. The biggest lead of the night came when
John Horowitz hit a deep three-pointer, at the shot clock buzzer, to put HPU up 27.
"I thought our team was ready to compete today. It was our third game in five days, and the last game before break, so I was encouraged by our energy and intensity," said Head Coach
Darren Vorderbruegge.
HPU had another balanced performance, with all eligible players seeing at least five minutes of playing time. Eleven of the 12 players got in the scoring column led by
Luke Hager's 15 points; he added 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
Justin Long hit three three-pointers on his way to 14 points as Jones Jr. added 11.
Connor Looney and Horowitz each provided nine points and five rebounds off the bench.
HPU shot the ball well all afternoon, including an astonishing 14-24 (58.3%) in the first half. The Sharks also had big advantages in the other two shooting categories; the home team made four more three-pointers and 14 more foul shots than the competition
The Sharks will close out 2014 with an exhibition game against British Columbia at Moanalua High School at 3:00 pm on December 31st.
