Box Score RIVERSIDE, CA (February 17, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (12-11, 7-10) gave eighth-ranked California Baptist (23-1, 17-1) all it could handle for 36 and a half minutes, but the Lancers prevailed 79-68 in Southern California.
HPU led the entire first half, building a lead of seven points twice. CBU seemed to have grabbed the momentum right before the half, but
Colfax Nordquist recorded an old fashioned three-point play with one second to go to give HPU a 45-39 advantage at the break.
The second half lead reached as many as eight-points for HPU, but the Lancers showed why they are so highly ranked. CBU battled back and took its first lead at 59-57 with 7:40 to play. HPU briefly regained the lead with 6:44 remaining on a 4-0 mini run, but CBU kept up the pressure.
Darry Jones Jr. hit a layup with 3:44 to play to tie the game at 63. However, the Lancers were nearly flawless from the foul line down the stretch.
The Sea Warrior defense was stingy, holding the home team to a 33.3% (21-63) shooting night from the field. However, HPU lost the rebounding and turnover margin by six each.
Malte Ziegenhagen led HPU with 18 points and added five rebounds.
Farbod Farman was strong in the post with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
HPU returns home to host Notre Dame de Namur in a pivotal game as both teams try to claim a spot in the PacWest Conference Tournament. Tipoff on Saturday at Moanalua High School is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
