Box Score KANEOHE, HI (September 11, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (2-0) picked up its second win in a row by defeating Western Oregon University (1-2) 3-1 on Thursday afternoon at Atherton Field.
The first ten minutes of the game presented a distorted picture of what was about to follow. Western Oregon quickly found its game, creating some risky situations for the HPU defense. After some good saves from keeper
Kelby Boswell and a great save on the goal line from defender
Christina Imada in minute eight, the Sharks started to become more active and to take over the game.
In the 12th minute,
Ashlyn Ubongen got the ball just in front of the box and chipped it over the goalie into the top corner, resulting in the lead for the Sharks. After the score, the Sharks ruled the game, playing aggressive and presenting good forechecking.
In the 18th minute, freshmen
Lei Kaina got the ball inside the box and fired to the top-right corner, not allowing the keeper any chance. The goal certainly is a memorable one for the forward from Waipahu, as it is the first goal of her young college soccer career.
HPU kept control of the game for the rest of the first half, although the Wolves managed to score on a long cross in the 36th minute.
Just two minutes after the changeover, Boswell, who finished with five saves, preserved the lead with a world-class diving save after a powerful shot on the right corner. The Sharks, however, did not leave any doubt about who is in charge at Atherton Field, by playing active and creating several more good chances.
In minute 71, Ubongen got the ball in the midfield from
Lexi Cameau once more, eluded two defenders and scored her second goal of the day with a powerful shot. Ubongen's goal is already her third for this season, and brings her on top of the PacWest scorer board.
The Sharks continued making plays and pushing for another goal in the last minutes of the game.
HPU was also leading the stats in shots (20-15) and shots on target (15-7).
Erika Ellis and Cameau both played an active game with five shots each.
The Women's Soccer Team will play its next game against University of Hawai'i Hilo. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, September 13th at 3pm in Kaneohe.
