Box Score KANEOHE, HI (September 16, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (3-0-1) defeated Chaminade University (0-2) 1-0 with a last minute goal on Tuesday afternoon. The Sharks therefore stay undefeated before traveling to the mainland.
HPU started with some good chances in the game against the local rival. In the 12th minute, HPU's top scorer
Ashlyn Ubongen managed to win the ball in the midfield and to dribble inside the box. Ubongen's good shot, however, was saved by Chaminade's keeper.
The Sharks were dominating the game in the following course but struggled frequently with Chaminade's outgoing and aggressive play. The Silverswords managed to keep the space tight, interrupting HPU's offensive play and clearing the ball.
The second half showed a similar picture of the game. Although HPU was significantly ahead in shots (20-2) and shots on goal (8-0), the Sharks failed to take advantage of their chances.
Finally, in the 85th minute, Ubongen got the ball in the midfield and sent a high cross to
Erika Ellis who saved her team by grabbing the lead with a merciless volley from inside the box. The goal was already Ellis second goal in a row after scoring against University of Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday.
The Sharks continued to make the plays and held onto the ball for the rest of the game.
Sharks Head Coach
Gina Brewer commented on her team's performance after the game, "I am glad that we found a way to score in the end. We now need to find a way to finish and to make sure that chances in the last third of the game are put away. However, I am happy about the win and to go on the road undefeated."
After three wins and one tie at home, the Sharks will now travel to California to play their next game against San Francisco State University on September 22.
