Box Score KANEOHE, HAWAII (October 1, 2015)—The Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team notched its first league victory via a 3-2 triumph over visiting Fresno Pacific University in a PacWest Conference contest at Atherton Field.
The Sharks (4-4, 1-2 PacWest) wasted no time scoring as
Noelle Mercado curved a corner kick past FPU goalkeeper Selena Braun in the 7
th minute. HPU surged ahead 2-0 on
Erika Ellis' quick strike on a precisely-placed pass from fellow senior
Breanna Gaddis in the 20
th minute. The home team then increased its lead to 3-0 in the 58
th minute as
Meghan Cooley scored following
Lei Kaina's free kick from 30 yards out.
The Sunbirds (4-3, 2-1 PacWest) rallied on a penalty kick goal from Bianka Garcia in the 61
st minute. The visitors then pulled to within one goal of the lead on an own goal as Cooley kicked the ball into the Sharks net while attempting to clear a FPU pass.
HPU departs for a four-match road trip, which begins on Oct. 6 at Point Loma in San Diego at 1 p.m. The Sharks also play Concordia University (Calif.) in Irvine, Calif., on Oct. 8 at 1 p.m., Azusa Pacific University on Oct. 10 at noon and at Chaminade University on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
