Box Score HONOLULU, HI (February 8, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (13-8, 8-7) lost to cross-town rival Chaminade (9-11, 6-8) 83-57 on Sunday at the Neal Blaisdell Center. The game also served as the fourth annual Kam's Helmets Day.
HPU Athletics distributed free bike/state board helmets, as well as moped helmets, to any student to hopefully prevent a future head injury. Kameron Steinhoff just finished his third season at HPU before he tragically passed away in a skateboarding accident in May of 2011. The event went well as many students, of all ages, came out to remember Kam.
The game, however, didn't go as HPU fans would wish. HPU's only lead of the game came just 21 seconds into the contest when
Luke Hager hit a pair of foul shots. The visitors built up a 7-2 lead early, but HPU matched with a 7-2 run of its own highlighted by a three-pointer by
Justin Long with 13:21 left in the half.
By the 9:41 mark of the opening half,
Clayton Guy hit a jumper to make it a one-point game at 14-13. The Sharks' offense then went cold, unable to score for nearly six minutes of game play. By the time
Connor Looney hit a long ball to break the streak with 3:24 left, the CUH lead was 12 (28-16). The 'Swords kept pushing and led 38-20 at the half.
Chaminade held serve in the second half and picked up its sixth conference win of the year.
Hager and
Darry Jones Jr. split team-high scoring honors with 13 each. Long pitched in 11 off the bench as Guy scored eight. Jones Jr. also led the team in rebounds (six) and assists (four).
HPU next leaves on a difficult Southern California road trip with games at Point Loma, Azusa Pacific and Dixie State. The trip beings on February 12 at PLNU.
