Women’s Soccer Falls to Westminster College in 2OT

Box Score WAIPIO, HAWAII (September 3, 2015)—The Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team dropped its season-opening match to visiting Westminster (Utah) College, 2-1, in a match that went to double overtime at a rain-soaked Waipio Soccer Park.

The Sharks (0-1) got on the board first as Erika Ellis rebounded a ball off the crossbar and headed it in for the score in the 22nd minute.

The Griffins (1-0) answered back, and as the squads sloshed through a soaked field, Madeline Orr nailed a goal on a blast that scooted just inside the left post. Westminster then scored the game-winning "golden goal" as Megan Molumby corralled a rebound inside the 18-yard box and beat HPU goalkeeper Lauren Spencer with a well-placed attempt.

The Sharks possessed the ball for much of the match but could only get the one score against Griffins goalkeeper Abi Yanke, who racked up five saves. HPU out-shot Westminster 12-6, including six shots on goal compared to three for the opposition.

HPU returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 12:30 p.m. at Atherton Field where it will face Wheeling Jesuit University.
