Box Score FRESNO, Calif. (January 5, 2016) – After senior forward
Luke Hager forced overtime with a put-back layup with four seconds left in regulation, the Hawaii Pacific men's basketball team excelled in bonus time to the tune of a 98-90 victory over Fresno Pacific at the FPU Special Events Center.
The victory served as the third consecutive win for the Sharks who also won their first non-neutral road game of the campaign.
The Sharks (7-4 overall, 2-2 PacWest) were led by a game-high 24 points from senior guard
Chauncey Orr, who made nine-of-12 from the field and all three of his 3-point attempts. The Bowling Green transfer also posted five assists and four rebounds to bolster the visitors' effort.
Senior forward
Joel Feigler, the reigning PacWest Defensive Player of the Week, poured in 20 points and pulled down three rebounds while also blocking a shot—his tenth rejection in his last three games. Hager (16 points) and
Connor Looney (10 points, nine rebounds) also scored in double figures for the Sharks, who out-rebounded the opposition 45-35. Reserve big man
Elliott DeFreitas pulled down seven boards and hit all four of his free throws to help the Sharks hang around in the second half.
In the final five minutes of the first half, the Sharks clamped down defensively and ended the first frame on a 16-6 run to establish a 38-32 advantage at intermission. HPU fell behind late in the second stanza but battled back down the stretch before tying the game at 81 with four seconds to play as Hager pulled down an offensive rebound and went back up for a layup to send the game to overtime.
The Sunbirds (7-4, 3-2) received 17 points from Gabe Solarin.
The contest was anything but pretty as both squads combined to commit 54 fouls and 52 turnovers. HPU relied on a balanced scoring effort as nine of its 10 players that saw game action scored at least five points.
The Sharks continue their three-game PacWest trip against Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Belmont, Calif.
