Koenig hat trick again, Sharks and Vulcans tie 4-4

KEEAU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University sophomore Sven Koenig collected his second hat trick of the season, but a Hawai'i-Hilo goal with 40 second left in regulation allowed the teams to settle for a 4-4 tie on Saturday afternoon in PacWest Conference play.

The Sharks (2-2-3, 2-0-1) and Vulcans (1-6-1, 0-3-1) played a wild second half, with each team scoring three goals.

Koenig, the 6-0 forward from Schuerte, Germany, collected three goals for the second time in three games. However it was teammate Erik Kemsies that was almost the hero of the game.

Kemsies a 6-0 senior midfielder from Velgast, Germany, recovered teammate Chris Williams shot off the post and buried in the net to give the Sharks a 4-3 lead in the 80th minute.

But it was Hilo's Jake Sagami who got a second attempt inside the box with 40 seconds to play, that got the goal to tie the Sharks.

Koenig had a shot as the half ended that UHH goalkeeper Andrew Tamburro saved.

In the extra time, the HPU defense did not allow a Vulcan shot, however the offensive opportunities were unlucky as Tamburro made three saves, as well saw the Sharks hit the post and send two other shots wide.

Koenig scored his first goal in the 11th minute to give HPU a 1-0 lead with a straight on shot.

Sagami tied the game at 1-all with a goal in the 39th minute and sent the contest to the half knotted.

In the second half, Koenig chalked up his second goal in the 55th minute, only to have UHH answer just four minutes later when Rodrigo Castellanos scored on a free kick.

The Vulcans got their only lead in the game in the 69th minute when Kyran Johal broke the tie with a header off the assist from Curtis Walker for a 3-2 advantage.

Koenig clipped that out quickly. Just three minutes later Koenig got the hat trick and tied the game on a shot from a scramble near the goal.

The Sharks now return to Oahu to play their next seven games. The Sharks host BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.
