WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University and BYU-Hawaii have met twice on the pitch in men's action and for the second consecutive game came away with a double overtime draw, this time at 4-4 in PacWest Conference action.
The Sharks (2-2-4, 2-0-2) tie for the fourth time this season, while the Seasiders (4-2-2, 3-1-1) with both draws against HPU. The teams tied 2-2 in a non-conference contest on Sept. 10.
BYUH's Jacob McRae scored his second goal of the game in the 87th minute to cap a furious Seasider comeback and overcome a two-goal Shark lead in the final 15 minutes of regulation.
The teams combined for 42 shots in the contest, with BYUH posting 22 and HPU 20.
HPU got on the scoreboard early when junior forward
Josch Cuerten from Cologne, Germany scored his second goal of the season on a breakaway in the eighth minute of the contest on a beautiful pass from
Erik Kemsies.
BYUH tied it just six minutes later as McRae scored his first goal of the game by collecting a deflected crossing pass and shooting as he pivoted to send it into the left side of the goal.
HPU got the upper hand back in the 22nd minute when the PacWest Conference's leading scorer
Sven Koenig took a long feed from freshman midfielder
Paul Enzigmueller of Zimdorf, Germany in the middle of the field. Koenig, a sophomore forward from Schuerte, Germany blasted the ball past BYUH goalkeeper Einar Johnson for his 12th goal of the season.
The Seasiders evened the game at 2-2 in the 38th minute with a Jaden Bybee goal from a corner kick by Jessey Hein.
The Sharks grabbed the lead just before the half with a goal in the 45th minute when Koening sent a pass across to freshman midfielder
Christian Porras who headed in his first collegiate goal to give HPU a 3-2 lead at the half.
The heavily contested game stayed at 3-2 until the 71st minute when Kemsies got his second assist on a long throw-in that found junior midfielder
Christopher Galang of Aiea, Hawai'i/Mililani wide open. Galang cashed in his shot for his first goal of the season and a 4-2.
But the Seasiders answered with intensity just five minutes later when Joshua Craddock was left open for a straight on shot to make it 4-3 in the 75th minute.
BYUH continued to press attack offensively and McRae was able to get the game-tying goal when a broken up pass was deflected to his foot for his eighth goal of the year.
Both teams had opportunities in the overtime periods, with the Seasiders having a pair of shots in the first extra frame saved by Sharks freshman keeper
Chandler Schur. HPU got off seven attempts in the second overtime, including a pair of multiple shot sequences that included a save for Johnson and a team save.
In all, both Schur and Johnson recorded eight saves, plus the two team saves for the Seasiders.
HPU is in action again on Saturday in a scheduled 12:30 p.m. contest on the island against Concordia Irvine.
