KEEAU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University junior
Sara Romo scored in the 84th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Sharks to a 2-1 PacWest Conference victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at Paiea Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks (2-5-1, 2-1-0) got the only goal after the 10th minute of the game, while the Vulcans (2-2-3, 0-1-3) remained winless in PacWest play.
Romo, a 5-6 forward from Elk Grove, Calif./Franklin, got a feed from sophomore
Kai Hasegawa in the 84th minute and slid it past UHH goalkeeper Jenna Hufford.
The Shark defense then locked down and never allowed the Vulcans another shot.
HPU got on the board first on Romo's first goal of the game in the eighth minute when she scored on the Sharks first shot of the game.
The Vulcans came back quickly as Abcde Zoller got a breakaway and beat Shark keeper
Lauren Spencer just two minutes later.
But that would be the end of the scoring.
Spencer, a 5-7 sophomore from Oxford, Mich., recorded five stops on the Vulcans other six shots in the game.
Zoeller picked up eight saves on the 16 shot attempts.
The Sharks defense did a tremendous job during the game, particularly in the second half. UHH got only one shot in the second 45 minutes, and that was saved by Spencer in the 67th minute.
The Sharks now return to Oahu to play their next seven games. The Sharks host BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
