KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific dropped its third straight game on Saturday as California Baptist grabbed a 2-1 PacWest victory at Atherton Field.
 
The Sharks (2-5-4, 2-3-2) dropped below .500 in PacWest play for the first time this season, while Cal Baptist (8-4, 4-3) won for the third time in the last four games.
 
CBU scored the game winner in the 81st minute when Aidan Apodaca received a pass in the middle of the box from Hugo Gutierrez and angled it beyond the reach of HPU goalkeeper Jesse Kunitomo.
 
The goal cut a second half momentum that the Sharks had developed heading down the stretch.
 
HPU tallied 17 shots, 10 in the second half, with CBU posting 12 shots, eight in the second.
 
Kunitomo, a senior from Mililani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, chalked up five saves for the afternoon for HPU. CBU keeper Riley Mayne picked up six saves in the contest.
 
The Lancers got an early lead in the match on Gutierrez' goal in the 25th minute. James Bogdanovich made a strong crossing pass to Gutierrez who was waiting near the right post.
 
The Sharks evened the game in the 51st minute when junior Josch Cuerten of Cologne, Germany collected his third goal of the season when he followed up a shot Mayne deflected from sophomore Sven Koenig of Schuerte, Germany.
 
The Sharks had their chances, but it was Mayne who came up strong with four of his six saves recorded after HPU scored its equalizing goal.
 
HPU is off until next Saturday when the host Oahu rival Chaminade in another contest in the Hawaii PacWest Cup. The match is scheduled 12:30 p.m. at Atherton Field.
