WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University scored two second half goals to end a four game losing streak with a 2-0 win over cross-town rival Chaminade in PacWest Conference play on Saturday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
HPU (3-9-1, 3-5-0) handed Chaminade (2-9-1, 2-6-1) its third straight loss and scored points in the Hawaii PacWest Cup.
The Sharks and Silverswords played a scoreless first half, but HPU didn't take long to change that in the second.
Sophomore
Noelle Mercado, a 5-2 forward from Honolulu, Hawai'i/Kaiser, collected a deflected crossing pass and sent it into the goal in the 50th minute to put the Sharks on the board 1-0.
The Sharks scored again in the 69th minute. Mercado sent a beautiful long pass from deep in the defensive end to a wide open Leonica Lopez. The 5-7 sophomore from Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers raced down the field on the dribble and beat Silversword keeper Brandee Lane to give HPU a 2-0 advantage.
Lane did record eight saves for CUH on the afternoon, while junior
Alannah John of Sacramento, Calif./Ponderosa kept a clean sheet for HPU while notching three saves. HPU outshot the Silverswords 13-7 in the contest.
The Sharks won't have long to enjoy the victory. HPU faces Point Loma on Monday at the Waipio Soccer Park. The match will follow men's action between the schools and is set to kickoff at 3 p.m.
