Sharks snare Azusa Pacific 4-3 in Double OT

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University sophomore Sven Koenig sent a shot sailing into the back of the net in the 107th minute as the Sharks grabbed a 4-3 double overtime PacWest Conference victory against Azusa Pacific at Thursday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.

The Sharks (4-6-4, 4-4-2) got all four of their goals after the 68th minute. Azusa Pacific (6-6-3, 6-4-1) remained in a third place tie with the loss.

Koenig, the 6-0 sophomore from Schuerte, Germany, collected his third hat trick of the season with the game-winning goal that was also his third of the season. Koenig leads the PacWest Conference with 17 goals and 37 points in 14 games.

Senior Erik Kemsies of Velgast, Germany, scored the Sharks first goal for his third of the season.

HPU outshot APU 18 to 13 and put more shots on goal (10-to-7) than the Cougars.

HPU senior goalkeeper Jesse Kunitomo of Mililani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, posted four saves with three goals allowed in the 107 minutes of action. APU keeper Tyler Jaramillo picked up six saves to go with four goals allowed.

The first half of the game definitely belonged to the Cougars.

Azusa Pacific didn't take long to open the scoring as Caleb Candelaria got a feed from Arturo Astorga on the right wing to score from the middle of the box in the fourth minute of play for a 1-0 lead.

Almost exactly 30 minutes later, APU scored again when Astorga passed from the left wing to a wide open Javier Chavez to make it 2-0 in the 34th minute.

The 2-0 score held at the half and looked like it might hold up when the Sharks accentuated their press about halfway through the second half.

The Sharks turned the press into a score in the 68th minute as Dean Phillips of Kahului, Hawai'i/Feather River, made a cross to Kemsies who blasted a 30-yard shot past Jaramillo, pulling HPU within one.

APU followed the HPU attack heavily and that started Koenig. A scrum near the circle's edge in the Sharks offensive end turned into a breakaway opportunity for the Sharks top scorer. Koening collected the loose ball and dribbled down to beat Jaramillo one-on-one in the 75th minute to knot the game at 2-2.

HPU continued to push forward and was rewarded in the 86th minute. Junior forward Josch Cuerten of Cologne, Germany got the ball on the outside and sent a long pass down field to an open Koenig. Once again the junior won a one-on-one with the keeper and the Sharks had their first lead of the game 3-2.

Azusa Pacific countered just two minutes later on a press of their own, with Candelaria finding Kaleb Armbrust for a shot that tied the match at 3-3.

But a costly foul in with only 20 seconds to play in regulation hurt Azusa tremendously. Candelaria, who had a goal and an assist, was given a red card for a deliberate dangerous play putting the Cougars a man down for the rest of the match.

HPU had two opportunities off corner kicks in the 93rd minute, but a header by senior Javier Risco Garcia of Madrid, Spain, was knocked away for a second corner kick. Then an attempt by Kemsies sailed over the goal.

In the second extra period, both teams missed on shots when the Sharks finally cashed in on their man advantage.

Cuerten sent a pass from the right wing to the top of the box to freshman Paul Enzigmueller of Zimdorf, Germany. Enzigmueller found Koening on a single mark and delivered a leading pass that set up the hat trick goal.

The Sharks closed their home season with the win at Waipio Soccer Park. They have three games remaining, all on a road trip to northern California that starts on Tuesday against Academy of Art. Kickoff is at 7:30 a.m. HST (10:30 a.m. PDT) at Beach Chalet Soccer Field in San Francisco.
